Renaissance  Award

To : Thomas Stone HS/120-04377-1

Challenge/Level:  Improv / SL

This team’s original and unexpected wordplay, physical depiction and humor popped higher than most foul balls. Given the characteristic of “foul”, they built a skit around a baseball theme and a character – a Chinese chicken. They truly showed improvisational skill when a member fell victim to a fowl swing. Their performance entertained and delighted everyone.

Renaissance  Award

To : John Handley/145-86186-3

Challenge/Level:  Cartoon / SL

Wow ! That’s all the appraisal team could say at the end of this team’s performance. The humor in this solution had the appraisers in stitches. The gorgeous, elaborate sets were something you’d see in a Broadway show. (The costumes were impeccable.) They had a wishing well that functioned with running water. The fins on the merman’s costume  included Q-Tips. The technology used to create the visual/sound special effects included a series of popping sounds that were caused by wooden paint stirrers being released when a fan motor drew a nylon cord. From the delivery of the performance to the extraordinary sets and costumes, we give this team a standing ovation.

Renaissance  Award

To : Glen Stewart (Lake Geneva Schools)/148-40141-1

Challenge/Level:  Time / ML

Picture a horse walking across the stage, eyes alight and limbs and head moving as if this electro-mechanical device was alive. The brains, sequencing switch, hydraulics and mechanics were all designed and fabricated by one team member.

Renaissance  Award

To : John Glenn Middle School/119-11768-2

Challenge/Level:  Guess / ML

PVC pipe and wood  Add stretched balloons and PVC pipe cut to just the correct length, then pluck the balloons and voila, we have music. Now elaborate with wood burning tools on the stand to create delicate ornamentations and maybe some twinkle lights for garnish – a true object of beauty. Oh, but we have some wood left over: stretched balloons, wood and PVC pipe cut to just the right length, pine planks with slits to top a resonating box add delicately sculpted balsa and you can create musical percussion. Every judge on the team walked away saying AWESOME !

Renaissance  Award

To : Roncalli Middle School/106-26371-1

This team designed a very intricate system of mechanics to DIvert the plot and change the backdrop. Their handmade switches, master control center, system of gears, motors & lights gave a new level of ingenuity that deserves recognition.

Renaissance  Award

To : Nipomo High School/105-83267-2

Challenge/Level:  Cartoon / SL

Broadway comes to Knoxville ? That’s what the appraisers thought when this team presented an outstanding, rip-roaring, melodic  solution. They put a song in our hearts and rhythm in our feet as these “hairy” characters sang and danced their way through their original cartoon story using a variety of musical styles. Original lyrics, soulful choreography, fabulous costumes and sets, rounded out by entertaining characters made this a most SUPERB solution. The whole experience made the “hairs” on our arms stand on end.

Renaissance  Award

To : Harlan Community HS/112-24557-1

Challenge/Level:  Time / SL

What came first the chicken or the egg ? Their system was an elegant and simple timing mechanism which worked flawlessly ! This combined with superb craftsmanship and engineering, allowed this six foot transforming steel framed Faberge egg to morph into a boat and turtle. This team proved that the egg comes first.

Renaissance  Award

To : Burtonsville Elementary School/120-48745-1

Challenge/Level:  Plot / EL

This elementary presentation left us holding our jaws ! Their X-Ray machine Plot Divertor produced two hilariously different dental visits – one pleasantly routine and the other maniacal ! These tales were accompanied by graphic noises and scary dental tools. They really struck a nerve !

Renaissance  Award

To : Maharishi School Team Gold/112-09545-1

This team created a hip hop opera which lasted the full eight minutes. A working turn-table with spinning records, moving speakers and turning dials was outstanding. This prop showed a high degree of attention to detail and craftsmanship. Their awesome teamwork and cooperation resulted in a SUPERFLY performance.

Renaissance  Award

To : Bel Air Middle School/120-54052-1

Challenge/Level:  Time / ML

Put together a large cardboard barrel, and old belt sander, some aluminum foil, and a bunch of complex electronic control circuits, and you have a timing device that left the audience and appraisers spellbound. Slowly rocking as it turned on and off, the barrel lurched across the floor to complete its task and was turned off by contact with a sheet of aluminum foil.  The whole team participated in the prototyping and building of this device resulting  in engineering excellence and creativity that was clearly on display to all.

Renaissance  Award

To : Lincoln Elemenraty School/128-955

Challenge/Level:  Plot / EL

This elementary team provided a highly skilled musical production that used two endings to their story to creatively illustrate the differences between living on a farm and living in the big city. The farm story depicted making corn bread from corn stalks and flowers that grew in the presentation. The city story showed us a working conveyor belt and the production of packaged food. What pushed the presentation over the top was that it was sung accapello from set up to finish including the Improv phase. The team’s soothing voices echoed in the room as they presented their tales.

Renaissance  Award

May 29, 2004    -     Global Finals

To : Park School/148-03650-1

Challenge/Level:  Time / EL

The technical timing device that this team created was a unique blend of a five level water timer and electric circuitry. The appraisal team was shocked by how precise, sophisticated, and yet elegantly simple this completely automated device was.

Renaissance  Award

To : Denver North High School/106-50495-1

Challenge/Level:  Cartoon / SL

This appraisal team never knew a cartoon could be serious. However, this High School team sure showed us. We watched in awe as we were taken into the subconscience of a boy in a coma.  Their performance was flawless – from the heart wrenching opening monologue to the revitalization of the character at the end.  Every part of the solution was well thought out and fit together like a perfect puzzle. The subconscience costume depicted all the ideas inside the boy’s head. The team’s colors and designs flowed from their set to the costumes to the props. By the end of the solution, some of the appraisers were so emotionally moved that we physically had trouble getting out of our seat. This performance was truly spectacular.

Renaissance  Award

To : Marlborough School/130-66138-2

Challenge/Level:  Time

This team exhibited an extraordinary amount of talent and energy during their performance. The team’s outstanding presentation left all who witnessed it smiling and happy. Flute playing of an improvised melody was a beautiful addition to a great performance. Renaissance  Award

To : Shiloh High School/111-58207-1

Challenge/Level:  Plot / SL

This team constructed a metal A-Frame that not only supported a large deck and ship, but also swung two team members. The team welded square metal beams together and supported the whole ship by wire cables. The cables not only supported but acted as the teams’ pendulum. The judges held their breath hoping team, platform and ship didn’t go flying off the stage.

Renaissance  Award

To : Granite Valley Middle/119-24596-1

Challenge/Level:  Plot / ML

From the fiery script to the pulsating props, to the innovative design of the restaurant patron, this solution was “hot and spicy”. The body parts of the story lines were depicted in vivid props. The stories were enhanced by humorous and well-timed dialogue. The main character’s goal was to cause burning pain but the outstanding performance was easy to swallow.

Renaissance  Award

To : East Bay/105-63882-1

Challenge/Level:  Cartoon / EL

We were blown away by the technical intricacies of the “Imagination Extraction Machine”. The Linear/Non-Linear motion machine consisted of team-connected mixers, dimmer switches, wires, tubes and incredibly sensitive springs. The team tried a wide variety of “tubes and springs” to get just the right sound… One to vacuum out brains ! But the solution blew us away !

Renaissance  Award

To : St. Peter Imagination Program/123-97975-1

Challenge/Level:  Cartoon / EL

The most simple things, such as the human body, can be used to make an exceptional performance. This team’s performance was a beautifully executed and consuming cartoon. They used their movements as an integral part of their skit. At one point, one team member became a bathtub and another was the shower. The timing of their movements kept the appraiser’s eyes riveted on the stage and laughing for the entire performance.

Renaissance  Award

To : Oakwood Elementary Funky Monkey/135-22551-1

Challenge/Level:  Guess / EL

This team studied hard and found that the real secret to holding the most weight was having the structure centered in the tester. To accomplish this task, the team designed a unique jig that was remarkable in its simplicity and efficiency. This enabled their structure to hold an incredible amount of weight.

Renaissance  Award

To : Slinger Owls (Red)/148-78275-1

Challenge/Level:  Plot / EL

Faith and technology need to live side by side in our world. Using the fire god, the team’s plot diverter, this elementary team explored both traditional and scientific explanations of volcanoes. The plot diverter was a skillfully engineered device incorporating multiple instances of pendular and mechanical motion. The costumes, background and storyline all came together to “wow” our appraisal team.

DaVinci  Award

May 29, 2004    -     Global Finals

To : Harmon Middle School/135-16932-4

Challenge/Level:  Plot / ML

Blending technical achievement with dramatic flair is what distinguished this Plot and Pendulum Middle Level team. Their variable amplitude pendulum initiate a precise catapult shot, bringing black and white are to “life”. Interactive dance accompanied by a lingering viola melody only enhanced this most creative solution. This team’s alternate story was ushered in with no simple event, but an elaborate colorization of “Pandora’s Attic”.  It is with pride we recommend Harmon Middle School from Aurora, OH.

DaVinci  Award

To : Korean Association for School Invention/171-67842-2

Challenge/Level:  IC / ML

This team is being presented with the DaVinci award for their extraordinary Instant Challenge performance. Their challenge was to create an old fashioned radio show from behind a screen. The team presented their performance in the Korean language. Using extraordinary sound effects and acting skills, that transcended the language barrier, the appraisers were able to understand and appreciate their entire performance. WITHOUT TRANSLATION!

DaVinci  Award

To : Huntingburg Elementary/115-93262-3

Challenge/Level:  Guess / EL

In solving this challenge the team took an extreme risk by making the structure consist of only twin “T” shaped pillars. There were virtually no horizontal supports while the span was nearly twice the required four inch distance. The “all or nothing” approach showed to the Weigh-In appraisers that the team was willing to make a structure that was unique as well as creative.  While meeting the requirements, this team showed that they stepped “out of the box” to solve this portion of the challenge.

DaVinci  Award

To : Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary School/750-51916-4

Challenge/Level:  Guess / EL

What’s special about a table ? Usually nothing. This team, however, used their heads. Cheese, broccoli, eggs, muffin and chicken cordon bleu appeared to be inanimate objects on the table. The food items were really team members with headpieces who rose out of holes in the table. The humor, puns in the dialogue, and facial expressions were the primary acting components. This unique approach made this performance “head and shoulders” above the rest.

DaVinci  Award

To : Freedom Independent School/142-94356-1

Challenge/Level:  Time / ML

If the DaVinci award is for thinking outside the box, this team leapt out of the box and ran screaming down the street. Their Instant Challenge solution in which they created receptacles to transport the balls, instead of simply letting them roll to the scoring area fully illustrates the concept of exceptional creative problem solving.

DaVinci  Award

May 29, 2004    -     Global Finals

To : Escola Americana Dio Rio de Janiero/163-57289-1

Challenge/Level:  Improv / ML

A device doesn’t have to work to be exceptionally creative. In this Instant Challenge, teams had to protect a piece of tissue paper from being torn. Just as a spider weaves a web to catch a fly, this team weaved their talents and materials to create a cat’s cradle-like net to protect the tissue. Although in the end the tissue was torn, this team “wowed” the appraiser with their risk-taking solution.

DaVinci  Award

To : Sulphur Springs Middle School/750-81392-1

Challenge/Level:  Cartoon / ML

This highly theatrical performance included continuous music and sound effects, but not a single spoken word. The body language, costumes and props told the story. The ingenious set design was a large – very large – microscope that revealed the humorous antics of biological cells. The team was required only to present a cartoon cel – yet we were thoroughly entertained by a vibrant cartoon about cells. We say “muy bien” to this ESL team from…

DaVinci  Award

To : Cloquet (pronounced KLO-kay)/123-23365-2

Challenge/Level:  Plot / SL

These girls took time to research the controversial, social topic of hate crimes. Two beautifully stitched peace quilts, one displayed on the wall, and one laid on a table  burned as a memorial to a dead friend. The sound of a Molotov cocktail exploding sent shivers up our spines and moved appraiser and audience to tears.

DaVinci  Award

To : Melrose/119-8055301

Challenge/Level:  Plot / SL

Team created a fabulous human pendulum, fully functioning and exciting. A team member hung upside-down from a snow board pivot while swinging, chanting and continuing the “circle of life” theme. The team’s idea was exceptional and full of risk.

DaVinci  Award

To : Barnstable High School/119-63858-1

Challenge/Level:  Time / SL

This team demonstrated incredible creativity and took an unprecedented risk in their “solution” to their timing device. They utilized a heat producing reaction and self-developed computer program to trigger the 3 required tasks. This was an extremely “DI”vergent method of using a very risky timing system.

DaVinci  Award

To : Granite Hills/105-68776-1

Challenge/Level:  Time / SL

Mumbley, Mumbley, Mumbley ! The team designed and constructed an incredible timing device that utilized many different aspects of creativity and total precision. The hand made, multi-geared device was seamlessly integrated to perform with virtually perfect accuracy. The combination of a unique approach to the design of their vehicle, an amazing script, and the Loch Ness Monster made this a great performance.

DaVinci  Award

To : John Bapst Memorial High School/121-37377-1

Challenge/Level:  Improv / SL

It takes an unmercifully talented team to compress a two hour opera into a six minute skit. This team presented a complex yet cohesive story and thoroughly integrated their unknown characteristic, which was “merciful”. Their unusually well-constructed story illustrated a full gamut of human emotion.
